Recent measurements [1] show evidence that the first excited state of 17Ne is bound with respect to one proton emission and unbound with respect to two proton emission. The two proton decay of this state is in direct competition with the γ-ray decay back to the ground-state. The latest results from the measurement of the γ-decay branch [2] leave room for the existence of a 2p-branch. Therefore a direct search for the two proton decay was performed at the NSCL. A secondary 60 A·MeV 17Ne beam was produced from a primary beam of 100 A·MeV 20Ne and further purified. The 17Ne then bombarded a 150 mg/cm2 Au target so that the first excited state was populated via Coulomb excitation and the decay products were than detected in a multi-stage particle telescope for protons and fragments, which allows the complete reconstruction of the decay-kinematics. The first results of this experiment will be presented.
