Coulomb excitation and fragmentation of 136Xe in relativistic heavy-ion collisions* — •A. Grünschloß — Institut für Kernphysik, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, D-60486 Frankfurt/M.

The electromagnetic excitation of two-phonon states of giant resonances in relativistic heavy-ion collisions was investigated in the past years [1]. The cross section for the double-phonon giant dipole resonance in136Xe was found to be enhanced by a factor of ≈2 relative to the harmonic limit [2]. At GSI we performed a new experiment with 136Xe beams (700 A·MeV), and bombarding several targets (Pb, C, Sn). The improved experimental technique allows for a closer examination of the anharmonic effects indicated in [2]. Simultaneously, we study the process of nuclear fragmentation and derive the temperature of the prefragments from spectra of evaporated neutrons.
