The NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS detects up to 1500 charged
particles in a single central Pb+Pb collision. At this high multiplicity
statistical fluctuations are small enough to search for dynamical
fluctuations of the momentum distributions of the produced particles
(mainly pions) for single events. In view of the formation of
Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC’s) we classify the events according
to the shape of the momentum distributions of the pions.
The occurrence of DCC’s implies the clustering of pions in phase space,
especially in momentum space. However because of subsequent
multiscattering this signal will be diluted and the final size of the
domain occupied by these pions in phase space is not known. To
recognize such events with peculiar momentum distributions we are
using wavelet transforms [1] which allow a detailed analysis independent
of scale.
