The Commissioning of the TRITRON — •Petra Schütz1, Adrian Cazan1, H.-J. Körner2, and Uwe Trinks11Technische Universität München, Physik-Department E12 — 2Technische Universität München

The TRITRON is the prototype of a cyclotron with separated orbits. This is the only type of cyclotron with longitudinal focusing, and therefore suitable for high intensity beams. The TRITRON project itself was started to develop the technology and to demonstrate the principle of this new type of accelerator. The ions are guided on a spiral orbit with fixed turn separation (4 cm) by superconducting channel magnets with alternating gradients. Six superconducting rf-cavities (170 MHz) produce accelerating voltages up to 1 MV each. The beam position can be measured by wire scanners. All components work very reliable, reproducible and stable. In September 97 a 32S+14-beam was accelerated for the first time continuously from 40.3 MeV to 72 MeV. Longitudinal focusing was observed for the first time. The longitudinal and transversal beam dynamics corresponds to theory. The principle of the separated orbit cyclotron is demonstrated.
