A variety of methods has been proposed to accelerate charged particles with lasers. The enormous field obtainable is very attractive (e.g. 1 TV/m). However, the transverse character of electromagnetic radiation makes thes business difficult. We sketch a method where a particle travelling with almost the velocity of light (e.g. electron of 10 MeV) is passed by a plane wave in the same direction. During the time of about one half-wave λ/2 the particle is accelerated in transverse direction. Then it enters the next plane-wave section shifted by about λ/2 where it is again accelerated, and so on. In practice the same wave field reflected may be used. Particles of the same kind can also be accelerated in opposite direction (displaced by λ/2). Phase focusing is achievable. Colliding-beam experiments appear feasible.
