The experimental examination of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule requires the measurement of the spin dependence of the total hadronic photoabsorption cross section over a wide range of photon energies. Therefore measurements will be carried out at MAMI and ELSA which will cover the photon energie region of 140 MeV - 3000 MeV.

In order to test the new GDH-Detector and to study sources of systematic uncertainties a pilot experiment was performed. In this experiment the unpolarised total hadronic photoabsorption cross sections on 12C, 1H, 2H and the neutron were determined in an energy range of 240 MeV ≤ Eγ ≤ 1140 MeV. The good agreement of the measured excitation functions with published data proofs the suitability of the GDH-detector for the actual GDH-experiments at ELSA. The experimental setup, the method of data analysis and final results will be presented.
