The detailed investigation of radiation phenomena associated with the passage of relativistic electrons through matter such as transition radiation or parametric x–radiation requires a relative energy resolution in the order of 10−4. A single crystal monochromator has been constructed and successfully tested at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. X–ray source, monochromator and detector are symmetrically arranged on a Rowland circle in Johann geometry [1]. The triangular shaped, elastically bent [2] silicon crystal images the x–ray beam to a monochromatic line focus in the detector plane 5.50 m apart from the crystal. Measurements of focus size and energy resolution at the K–absorption edge of molybdenum (20000 eV) agree with calculations. The monochromator will be part of a new interferometer in the hard x–ray regime between 5 and 40 keV which is currently developed.
