1.2 GeV p-induced spallation reactions were studied at COSY with a 4π-silicon ball (BSiB) and a 4π-neutron ball (BNB). The emission of light particles (n, p, ..., α) and IMF was measured (energy spectra, angular distributions, multiplicities) for targets of Fe, Ta, W, Au, Pb, and U. The event-by-event measured correlated multiplicity of neutrons hydrogen and helium particles can be exploited to deduce the excitation energy distribution of the residual nuclei left after the intranuclear cascade (INC). Absolute cross sections for hydrogen and helium production were deduced which are of special interest for the design and construction of spallation neutron sources such as the european spallation source (ESS). We have also measured the inclusive neutron multiplicity distributions for a 5 mm thick Hg and a 1 mm thick Au target, the Hg-target is of special interest since it is planned to employ Hg as target material for ESS. The experimental results are compared with INC calculations.
