Two plasticfibre-cherenkov-sampling calorimeters with 10·10cm transverse dimensions made of copper respectively tungsten were tested with the 100 GeV and 158 GeV proton beam at the SPS/CERN.
Calorimeters of this type will get installed in the 0o region of all experiments at RHIC to measure neutron spectators. This measurement will be used to determine impact parameter and vertex position. In addition the single neutron signal from correlated coulomb dissociation will be used to monitor luminosity.
For the copper calorimeter energy resolution is 17% σ/E at 158 GeV and 20.5% σ/E at 100 GeV, for the tungsten calorimeter 18% σ/E at 158 GeV and 20% σ/E at 100 GeV.
Time resolution is better than 300ps for both prototypes.
