A fast Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detektor (RICH) will act as a hadron blind trigger device in the dilepton spectrometer HADES at GSI Darmstadt to identify e+e-pairs from meson decay produced in central heavy ion collisions at Ekin ≃ 1 A · GeV. The RICH consists of a C4F10 gas radiator surrounding the target, a spherical VUV-mirror and six multiwire proportional chambers with cathode pad readout and CsI photon converter for single VUV-photon detection. In july ’97 the performance of a prototype setup in the environment of a Ekin ≃ 1 A · GeV U-beam (106 part./spill) hitting a 6 g/cm2 Pb-target was studied. First results of an analysis of the identification of e+e-pairs produced by external conversion in the Pb-target using two types of ring finding algorithm are presented and compared to a GEANT simulation.
