Mesonic effects in Photon scattering by nuclei and nucleons — •D. Tietjen, S. Wetzel, M.-Th. Hütt, and M. Schumacher — II. Physikalisches Institut der Universität Göttingen

Two different approaches to Compton scattering by correlated fermion pairs are outlined.

The first approach studies the influence of meson exchange currents on photonuclear sum rules and compares it with corrections due to retardation effects and higher multipoles.

The aim of the second approach is to calculate the contributions of pion exchange between constituent quarks inside the nucleon to the nucleon’s electromagnetic polarizabilities. The necessary diagrammatic techniques were recently applied to the meson induced modifications of the bound nucleon’s polarizabilities inside the nucleus [1].

The conceptual framework of these approaches is discussed and first results are presented for both calculations.
