REXTRAP, a Penning trap ion accumulator and buncher for REX - ISOLDE — •P. Schmidt1, F. Ames1, G. Bollen2, G. Huber1, I. Martel Bravo3, and REX - ISOLDE41Institut für Physik, J. Gutenberg Universität, D-55099 Mainz — 2Cern, CH-1211 Genf 23 — 3Instituto de Estructura de la Materia, CSIC, Madrid — 4

REX - ISOLDE, placed at the on line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN, is an experiment to postaccelerate radioactive ions up to an energy of 2.2 MeV/u. It consists of a Penning trap, an EBIS ion source and a linear accelerator. The task of the trap is to accumulate the continuous beam of singly charged 60 keV ions from the separator and to send them as a bunch to the EBIS ion source. REXTRAP is a cylindrical, gas filled Penning trap placed in the 3 T magnetic field of a superconducting solenoid. After an electrostatic deceleration the ions are captured inside the trap by collisions with the buffer gas. To ensure a capture efficiency near 100 % a gas pressure of ≤ 10−3 mbar Ar is required for a trap length of 90 cm. Centering of the ions in the middle of the trap is achieved by applying an rf field at the the cyclotron frequency of the desired ion species. After ejection from the trap the ions are accelerated again to 60 keV to ensure an efficient beam transport to the EBIS. First measurements on the capturing of ions in REXTRAP will be presented.
