Measurement of the spectral attenuation length of commercial high purity mineral oils and scintillators — •M. Becker — Forschungszentrum und Universit"at Karlsruhe

The detection of low energy neutrinos requires large volume liquid scintillators like KARMEN, Čerenkov detectors or combinations of both, so called hybrid detectors like LSND. This work is part of detailed investigations within the KARMEN experiment to test highly pure mineral oils, liquid scintillators and water. The experimental aim is to define criteria to select a suitable detector material for a hybrid prototype detector for ν–physics.

Energy, spatial and time resolutions of large volume ν–detectors strongly depend on the transparency of the detector material. The spectral attenuation length Λ(λ), which defines the optical properties, can be measured independently of the actual geometry by a dual beam laser photometer up to 100 m with high accuracy. The measured attenuation length of different highly transparent commercial oils are presented and discussed, taking into account Čerenkov and scintillation emission spectra together with PM quantum efficiencies. Results of the measurement of oils and special liquids like Gd-loaded and water soluble scintillators are presented.
