A system has been developed for monitoring of the gain and the timing properties of scintillation and Cherenkov counters installed at the spectrometer ANKE at COSY Jülich. It will furthermore be used for checking the position of the 102 time windows of the fast TOF trigger which have to be adjusted separately for each physically reasonable combination of one out of 23 start counters and one out of 15 stop counters. The LED monitoring system consists of fast power pulse generators, a controller which defines the pattern of operated LEDs and properly selected fast LEDs which are mounted in the center of counter paddles so that the measured amplitudes are sensitive to the quality of the scintillator, the light guides and the glued joints. It was found that the temperature dependence of the LED light output is typically −1%/K which will be compensated for based on the measured temperature of the detector system. LEDs have been burned-in until ageing effects leading to an initial decrease of the light intensity have vanished.
