Mesons like pions and K+ which are produced in intermediate energy heavy ion reactions are regarded as a probe for the hot and dense phase of nuclear matter. We study in general the influence of medium corrections to the pion and kaon dispersion relation which modify the real part of the meson optical potential. The heavy ion reactions are described within the QMD/RQMD transport model. We further investigate the dependence of the pion dynamics on the nuclear mean field. We find that pion yields and spectra are modified compared to the standard treatment in transport calculations if one accounts for the relevant nuclear many-body effects, i.e. the mean field is derived from the Brueckner G-matrix [1]. Also the isospin dependence of the nuclear mean field in strongly proton/neutron asymmetric systems has influence on the pion dynamics [2]. The in-medium kaons are described in a quasi-particle picture including scalar and vector mean fields. Their propagation is consistently performed according to a covariant Vlasov type transport equation. Transverse flow and spectra of pions and kaons are compared to results obtained by the KaoS and FOPI collaboration.
