Decay properties of the two-phonon dipole resonance in 208Pb* — •Konstanze Boretzky — Institut für Kernphysik, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, D-60486 Frankfurt/M.

The electromagnetic excitation of the double-phonon giant dipole resonance (DGDR) of 208Pb in heavy-ion collisions at high energy was observed in [1]. Here, we present a detailed study of the decay properties of the DGDR. Kinetic energy spectra and angular distributions of emitted neutrons (transformed into the 208Pb rest frame) are compared with calculations within the framework of statistical models. Evidence for non-statistical decay components could not be found. Combining the neutron decay data with data for the small DGDR γ-decay branch observed in [2] allows for an estimate of the damping rate of the coherent double-phonon state.
