Elastic np scattering and the π NN coupling constant, f2πNN. — •J. Franz, E. R"ossle, H. Schmitt, and L. Schmitt — Fakult"at f"ur Physik der Universit"at Freiburg

The value of the πNN coupling constant, f2πNN, has focussed new interest recently in connection with a discussion on a conceivable breaking of charge independence [1-4]. One can extract in principle the charged πnp coupling constant, fc2, by extrapolating the measured backward elastic differential cross section to the pion pole in the unphysical region. We applied the Chew method [5] to an extensive set of medium energy data for np elastic scattering in the backward hemisphere. The extracted fc2 values depend sensitive on the experimental uncertainties and on the angular range for the extrapolating fit. Systematic tests of this method have been performed on pseudodata showing the limited applicability of the extraction.
