Determination of the angular distribution of the characteristic γ-radiation in the reaction p(n,γ)d — •T.M. Müller1,2, D. Dubbers2, and O. Zimmer11Institut Laue-Langevin, B.P. 156, F-38042 Grenoble Cedex 9 — 2Physikalisches Institut, Philosophenweg 12, D-69120 Heidelberg

In the simplest models the calculation of the neutron capture cross section for protons differ at about 10% from the experimental result. This discrepancy has been explained by several more sophisticated models which make different assumptions about its physical origin. These models can be tested experimentally by looking at the characteristic γ-radiation in more detail. Its polarization [1] and angular distribution [2] yield information about the initial and final state and the kind of radiational transitions respectively.

In our experiment we measure the angular distribution of γ-quanta from the capture of polarized neutrons by polarized protons with their spins parallel to each other. The experiment is performed at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin (France).
