Reaction Mechanisms in the 9Be(n,2n)2α Reaction — •Siegfried Tagesen1, Herbert Vonach1, and Vladimir Pronyaev21Institut f. Radiumforschung und Kernphysik, Uni Wien, Boltzmanngasse 3, A-1090 Wien — 2I.A.E.A., Nuclear Data Section, Wagramerstrasse, A-1400 Wien

The reaction 9Be(n,2n)2α, the dominating process in the interaction of fast neutrons with Be, may proceed via a large number of different sequences of two-body and three-body reactions involving different levels of 6He, 5He and 9Be as intermediate steps. In this work energy and angular distributions for all relevant reaction channels (up to an incident neutron energy of 20 MeV) were calculated. Subsequently, cross sections for the various reaction channels were determined by simultaneously fitting a weighted sum of single reaction channel double differential distributions to the existing double differential neutron and alpha emission cross sections. In this way it could be established that, e.g. at En = 14 MeV, the three body breakup 9Be + n → 5He + 4He + n is one of the dominating reaction channels.
