Confinement and scaling of the vortex vacuum of SU(2) lattice gauge theory — •Kurt Langfeld, Hugo Reinhardt, Oliver Tennert, and Michael Engelhardt — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Tübingen, D–72076 Tübingen, Germany

Center projection [1] of the link variables of lattice gauge theory has revealed a vortex type structure of the Yang-Mills vacuum. In this vacuum, confinement of static quarks is due to a randomly fluctuating number of vortices piercing the minimal area of the Wilson loop [1]. In our recent work [2], we present a visualization of the vortices for a given time slice for several values of β . We show for the first time that the mean vortex density ρ scales according to the prediction of the renormalization group implying that ρ is a physical quantity rather than a lattice artifact. In particular, we find that roughly 2 vortices pierce an area of 1  fm2 . We have furthermore investigated correlations between the points at which the vortices pierce the minimal area of the Wilson loop. These correlations provide information about the interaction between the vortices. Our numerical results indicate that an attractive interaction of the vortices survives in the continuum limit.
