On the Relation between Instantons and Monopoles in Different Gauges — •H. Markum1, Z. Schram2, and S. Thurner11Institut für Kernphysik, Technische Universität, A-1040 Wien — 2Department of Theoretical Physics, Kossuth University, H-4010 Debrecen

Lattice simulations of correlation functions between instantons and monopoles in maximal abelian projection have indicated a nontrivial correspondence between these topological objects. This turned out generically both for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory as well as in the presence of dynamical quarks in four dimensions [1]. Visualization of specific gauge configurations clearly exhibited the local coexistence of instantons and monopoles. The question arises if this is a unique feature of the maximal abelian gauge constituting collective degrees of freedom with a special physical relevance. As a next candidate the Polyakov gauge is under consideration where for T = 0 the abelian projection seems to yield a smaller string tension and weaker correlations between monopole density and topological charge density. This should be compared with the result of a recent paper by Reinhardt [2].
