Measurement of Fragmentation Functions with the Hermes Experiment — •Philipp Geiger — Max Planck Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

The fragmentation functions of u and d quarks into identified charged pions with momenta between 4 and 13.5 GeV in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV positrons off nucleons are measured with the Hermes Experiment at HERA.

In particular, the ratio of the unfavoured over the favoured fragmentation function is extracted, where detector and acceptance corrections mostly cancel and comparisons to other data can be made. The result shows good agreement with the values published by the EM Collaboration. In addition, two different extraction methods can be compared. The first method on a deuterium target does not require the necessarily model dependent input of parton distributions, where the second method combines different targets via the use of parton distribution parametrisations.

An interesting behavior to investigate is the xBj-dependence of the fragmentation, which reveals the validity of the Quark Parton Model assumption of factorisation at Hermes energies.
