On quantum effects in nanomechanics — •Charles Stafford — Fakultät für Physik, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Hermann-Herder-Str. 3, 79104 Freiburg

The mechanical properties of ultrasmall metallic structures, in which the cohesion is provided by phase-coherent conduction electrons, are calculated using the electronic scattering matrix. The nanomechanics of free-electron jellium structures are investigated in detail, including the effects of disorder, magnetic field, and inelastic scattering. The mechanical and electrical properties of such model metallic nanostructures are shown to be complementary, and the analogues of several quantum transport phenomena, such as conductance quantization, universal conductance fluctuations, and the Aharanov-Bohm effect, are elucidated. All of these effects are shown to lead to oscillatory quantum corrections to the metallic cohesive force of order εFF ∼ 1nN.
