Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) of long-lived cosmogenic and anthropogenic radionuclides became a powerful tool to investigate our environment at large. This encompasses the seven global domains: atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, cosmosphere, and technosphere. VERA, the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator was established in 1996 to pursue this goal with a dedicated 3-MV tandem AMS facility. We present a brief summary of the AMS program including applications of ¹⁴C in art, archaeology, atmospheric chemistry, and forensic medicine, of ²⁶Al in nuclear physics, of the development of ¹⁰Be measurements for climatological studies in loess and sediments, and of ¹²⁹I for transport phenomena connected to the nuclear industry and for dating. Besides applications, some novel techniques for AMS measurements will also be discussed. Although we are far from being a true ’environmental’ accelerator, we believe that the intrinsic versatility of VERA and AMS should give us a reasonable chance for success.
