Photon echo, resonant transient grating and frequency resolved pump-probe are reported on hydrated electrons, using 15 fs excitation pulses. All experiments exhibit a signature of wave packet dynamics attributed to a mode of about 700 wavenumbers. Experiments in heavy water expose the librational nature of this solvent motion. Rigorous calculations using the Brownian oscillator model show that the electron-solvent correlation function can be described by an underdamped oscillator, whose parameters match the librational motions in water. Though gross features can be explained by two-level dynamics, comparison between pump-probe and transient grating experiments signal the importance of three-level effects.
