Fiber phase conjugators: time and frequency resolved reflectivity — •Q. Zhu, H. J. Eichler, B. Liu, and O. Wittler — Optisches Institut, Technische Universität Berlin, Straße des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin

Stimulated Brillouin-scattering (SBS) in undoped multimode quartz fibers leads to effective phase conjugation with low power threshold and high fidelity in a broad wavelength range from the near infrared over the visible down to the near ultraviolet, offering a good alternative to fluid and gaseous SBS-media that are toxic or operated under high pressure. For input pulses with a coherence length of about 50 cm at 1064 nm wavelength, a saturation of the SBS reflectivity was observed at a value of about 50%, not considering the reflection losses on the fiber surface. To understand this saturation phenomenon, we analysed the temporal and spectral structures of the transmitted and reflected light from fiber phase conjugators of different geometries. The saturation behavior of the total SBS reflectivity is related to oscillations of the temporal reflectivity.
