We consider a realistic model of a triply resonant optical parametric oscillator using a spherical mirror cavity, which is externally driven by a finite sized pump field. In contrast to the standard plane wave model, depending on the size of the pump and the cavity geometry, a cross-coupling between different pairs of oscillating cavity modes occurs. The coupling integrals between the various modes are derived from the classical nonlinear field equations in the paraxial approximation. For a TEM00−pump field the transverse integrals can be evaluated analytically. We find a change of the OPO threshold and stable simultaneous oscillation of several mode pairs with fixed relative phases as well as oscillating self-pulsing type solutions. In the case of a large number of almost frequency degenerate modes, i.e. a quasiconfocal or quasiplanar cavity, we find the formation of different types of stable as well as of oscillating field patterns. Below threshold similiar patterns appear in the nonclassical intensity correlations of the generated photon pairs.
