We present a scheme to detect and invert quantum jumps in the quantized centre of mass motion of a single trapped ion. We asssume the ion to be confined in a harmonic trap potential and consider motional decoherence using the quantum jump approach. Given the ion in an unknown superposition of two specific motional states we show how a quantum jump can be detected by employing the ion’s electronic degrees of freedom. The action of the quantum jump on the motional state can then be inverted and the initial superposition state preserved.
