Towards a degenerate Cs gas: elastic vs. inelastic collisions — •J. Dalibard, J. Söding, D. Guery-Odelin, P. Desbiolles, G. Ferrari, M. Arndt, M. Ben Dahan, and M. Reynolds — Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel, 24 rue Lhomond, 75000 Paris, France
We present recent measurements of elastic and inelastic collisions in a gas of ultracold cesium atoms. The elastic cross-section is found to be unusually large due to a zero-energy resonance. This is at first sight very favourable for an efficient evaporative cooling of the gas. Unfortunately we also find that inelastic processes occur with a rate which is 3 orders of magnitude larger than predicted, and than measured for other alkali atoms. This rules out the possibility for achieving Bose-Einstein condensation of a Cs gas confined magnetically, at least if the atoms are prepared in the doubly polarized state.
