Single molecules in solid matrices at cryogenic temperature exhibit extremely narrow zero phonon lines whose width and spectral position are extremely sensitive to local variations in the environment. In order to assign spectral behavior to structures in the molecular environment we use fluorescence confocal scanning optical microscopy (CSOM). CSOM provides highly resolved three dimensional images and allows also for spatial selection and spectral investigation of appropriately chosen single molecules. A bimorph piezo scanner and a stepper motor driven microscope objective reside in a cryostat that can be optically accessed via a bottom window and thus allows for an exceptionally large sample volume. Exploiting the large space, the bimorph scanner has been designed to have a scan range of 20 µ even at superfluid helium temperature. CSOM images of single molecules at low temperature will be presented.
