Evidence for a magnetic live surface layer in fcc Fe/Co(100) from photoelectron diffraction in magnetic dichroism — •Xingyu Gao, M. Salvietti, W. Kuch, C. M. Schneider, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, D-06120 Halle

We have investigated the angular dependence of magnetic dichroism in photoemission from the 2p core-levels of ultrathin fcc Fe films grown at room temperature on 5 monolayers (ML) Co/Cu(001), using unpolarized Mg Kα radiation. The angular dependence is dominated by diffraction effects from photoelectron forward scattering. The combination of magnetic dichroism and photoelectron diffraction provides information on the magnetic and structural properties of magnetic layers and surfaces on an element resolved basis. Comparing the results from Fe layers of different thickness, it is shown that Fe films of 1 and 3 ML thickness are entirely ferromagnetic, whereas the reduced dichroism and the disappearance of its angular variation prove that an 8 ML Fe film exhibits a ferromagnetic atomic layer on top of non-ferromagnetic underlayers.
