Nonlinear Magneto-Optics of Fe monolayers and nanostructured films — •J. P. Dewitz and W. Hübner — Max-Planck Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, D-06120 Halle/Saale

We present ab initio results for the nonlinear magneto-optical response of freestanding Fe films. The electronic structure and the optical properties are calculated by using ab initio method and the framework of the nonlinear magneto-optical theory by Hübner and Bennemann [1], including the additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling and optical dipole matrix elements.

Special emphasize is put on the dependence of the optical response on the structure of the films. The effects of different in-plane lattice constants as well as different surface orientations like (100), (110) and (111) are analyzed. Furthermore we study the effect of nanostructuring by investigating the nonlinear magneto-optical response of regular chains and triangular islands.

The nonlinear Kerr spectra and the absolute values of the susceptibility as well as the relative size of the magnetic and nonmagnetic tensor elements, which is governed by spin-orbit coupling, are compared for the different systems. The symmetry properties of the susceptibility tensor in the presence of a magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling are taken into consideration, explicitly.
