Minimal model for relaxational granular compaction — •Stefan J. Linz — Theoretische Physik I, Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg, D-86135 Augsburg

One particularly fascinating aspect of granular systems is their ability to reduce their void volume under tapping. Based on previous results on macromechanical modeling of the de– and recompaction process after a tap [1], we present a simple time-continuous nonlinear relaxation law for the decay behavior of the void volume. In this minimal model, the compaction behavior of the granular system basically determined by one global material dependent quantity and possesses the experimental result of Knight et al. [2] and the numerical result of Hong et al. [3] as special cases.
