Nanocrystalline Zirconia: Neutron Scattering, EXAFS and Reverse Monte Carlo — •Markus Winterer and Vladimir Srdic — Markus Winterer, Vladimir Srdic, Bob Delaplane and Robert McGreevyThin Films Division, Materials Science Department, Darmstadt University of Technology, Petersenstr. 23, D-64287 Darmstadt, Germany

Nanocrystalline Materials are disordered on the nanometer scale. The disorder is due to a large volume fraction of atoms in interfaces. Nanocrystalline zirconia is produced by a modified PVD method, the Inert Gas Condensation (IGC) and a modified CVD method, the CVS.

The structure of ultrafine powders and nanocrystalline solids is investigated for materials synthesized with both methods. The combination of the complementary methods, neutron scattering and EXAFS spectroscopy together with the Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis technique give information about local and long range order through radial distribution functions.
