The lidar facility at Ny-Ålesund/Spitsbergen is dedicated to observations of stratospheric ozone, temperature, and aerosols. The former can be observed during polar night and polar day conditions, while aerosol observations are concentrated on the dark winter periods. The most prominent feature is the regular observation of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs). PSCs are known to be a necessary prerequisite for the strong polar ozone loss, which is observed in the Arctic (and above Spitsbergen).

The PSC data set accumulated during the last years allows the characterization of various types of PSCs and how they form and develop, including subclasses, which have been identified by thermodynamic modeling of the formation processes. Of special interest was the simultaneous occurrence of PSCs and the volcanic aerosols after the Pinatubo eruption. Data from recent winters, which have been extremely cold, indicate an increase of PSC occurrence, as seen in the observation statistics.

The lidar facility is part of the Arctic Primary Site of the international Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC).
