The Transition from Ohm’s to Poiseuille’s Law for the Flow of Normal Liquid 3He in Aerogel — •Dietrich Einzel1 and Jeevak M. Parpia21Walther-Meissner-Institut, D-85748 Garching — 2Cornell University, Ithaca N Y 14853, USA

In this contribution we study theoretically the transport properties of normal liquid 3He in aerogel. The latter is accounted for by adding relaxation rates representing elastic (impurity) scattering processes off the aerogel strands to the collision integral for the Fermi liquid in the spirit of Matthiessen’s rule. It turns out that while the thermal conductivity and spin diffusion are trivially affected, the resistance to mass flow shows a crossover from Hagen– Poiseuille’s to Ohm’s law when the temperature and the (not too high) aerogel concentration are varied. This crossover is unique to the system of 3He in aerogel and can probably be experimentally observed in torsional oscillator and U–tube relaxation experiments.
