Vacuum Behaviour of Cathode Ray Tubes, UHV in Your Living Room — •J.-P. Jacobs and D. Dijkamp — Philips Display Components, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Philips Display Components is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of television / monitor tubes (CRTs). The vacuum demands are very strict to guarantee set-life for more than 30.000 hrs of operation in your home. The reason for this is that the cathodes are very sensitive to both chemical poisoning and ion bombardment. The presence of electrons (30 keV) and photons (visible, x-ray) make the vacuum behaviour very complex. Understanding of the degassing behaviour of the different coatings in the tube and the interaction with the cathodes are essential factors for process and product improvement. An overview will be given of the degassing behaviour of CRTs during manufacturing and operation. Some of the opportunities which are still unexplored will be discussed. eigentliche Text, genau einmal
