Neutron induced fission of 239Pu in the resolved resonance region — •F.-J. Hambsch, L. Demattè, and H. Bax — JRC-IRMM, Retieseweg, B-2440 Geel, Belgium

A new measurement of the fission fragments’ mass and energy characteristics of the 239Pu(n,f) reaction in the resolved resonance region has been started at the IRMM. The investigation will address the still open question whether a spin dependence of the fission fragment properties exist. A former experiment on 235U(n,f) [1] did not provide an unequivocal answer. The situation concerning the spins in 239Pu(n,f) seems more clear, with only 0+ and 1+ as possible values and an energy gap of about 1 MeV between the relevant transition states [2]. Moreover, measurements of the neutron and gamma multiplicities of 239Pu(n,f) show a remarkable (n,γf) competition that could also be observed in the average fragment total kinetic energy (TKE) [3]. The experimental details will be presented and the results will be discussed in view of their implications on the current understanding of the nuclear fission process.
