Diabatic potentials are studied as a function of the elongation and the neck parameter for various symmetric heavy ion systems. In the calculations the maximum symmetry method is used within the generalized two-center shell model. The diabatic potentials show hindrances for the motion to smaller relative distances and for the growth of the neck. They are similar to the nucleus-nucleus potentials used in the dinuclear system model of fusion which describes the experimental data quite well. The dependence of the diabatic potential on temperature and mass asymmetry is discussed.
