Compact stars and black holes are sources of gravitational waves in many phases of their life: at their birth, when gravitational collapse ends the evolution of a sufficiently massive star by an intense burst of radiation, or later, when compact bodies revolve around each other in binary systems, or encounter an occasional companion and coalesce. In addition, if gravitational events of a given sort are frequent enough, the signals they produce superimpose and generate backgrounds of radiation. The properties of signals produced in individual and collective astrophysical events can be studied by using different approaches, that range from the direct integration of the fully non-linear Einstein equations (numerical relativity), to perturbative approaches (the theory of stellar pulsations) and approximate methods (post-newtonian or quadrupole formalisms). In this lecture some of the main results obtained by using different approaches will be illustrated.
