Measurement of Ground State Copper Densities During the Hollow Cathode Phase of Pseudospark Discharge — •V. Arsov, Ch. Bickes, K. Frank, M. Iberler, U. Prucker, A. Rainer, J. Schwab, J. Urban, and W. Weisser — Universit"at Erlangen, Erwin-Rommel-Str. 1, D-91058 Erlangen

The hollow cathode phase of pseudospark is considered of primary importance concerning discharge initiation and conduction, but still there is need for further quantitative understanding. Knowledge of the densities of the particles, sputtered from the cathode accounts for increasing of the lifetime of devices, operating on pseudospark, such as pseudospark switches. Although copper has no longer practical application as electrode material it is well studied and is suitable for modelling [1]. The reported experimental results are extension of the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) studies of pseudospark [2], [3]. The geometry of the discharge chamber is typical for single-gap pseudospark switch with copper electrodes, the only difference being the quartz windows, which allow optical access in the spatial regions of interest. Neutral copper atom densities are detected by LIF. Measurements are performed in the hollow cathode and main-gap regions during the hollow cathode phase.
