Distinction of protonated C6H12O-ketone isomeres by tandem MS in an ion trap mass spectrometer — •A. Kiendler, V. Wiedemer, and F. Arnold — Max-Planck Institut füer Kernphysik, Bereich Atmosphärenphysik, Heidelberg

The studies presented were made with a PITMAS (paul ion trap mass spectrometer) coupled with a flow tube reactor. Protonated ketone monomers and higher clusters are produced from the reaction of H+(H2O)n with C6H12O. Apart from single stage MS the ion trap offers the possibility to do tandem mass spectrometry. Tandem MS studies of H+C6H12O io from different isomeric parents show different energy barriers and fragmentation paths. This implies that in the process of protonation the isomeric structure is conserved and fragmentation in the trap occurs before isomerization is efficient. Thus one is able to distinguish between different isomers. Implications for the selective measurements of structural isomeres will be discussed. Particularly the possibility of fast real-time measurements of atmospheric trace gases using an air craft based PITMAS will be adressed and a novel air craft baised PITMAS will be described.
