Maximum extractable energy from cw laser diodes for a Yb-glass amplifier — •Thomas T"opfer1, Jens Philipps1, R. Sauerbrey1, and Franz X. Deiminger21Friedrich-Schiller-Universit"at Jena, Institut fr Optik und Quantenelektronik, Max-Wien-Platz 1, 07743 Jena — 2Jenoptik Laserdiode Gmbh, 07745 Jena Pr"ussingstra"se 41

CW laser diode bars emitting at 940 nm were tested to find out the maximum extractable energy per pulse. Both diodes are commercially available at present and were operated under conditions required for a Yb:glass high peak power laser system, namely a pulswidth of 2 ms at a repetitionrate of 0.1 Hz and a lifetime of some million shots. Diode arrays were 1 cm wide with 50 % fill factor consisting of 25 emitters with 200 µ m width each. The diode was driven by a battery of capacitors in parallel which delivered up to 400 A. Some diode bars could be driven to almost 200 mJ at 1.3 ms pulses before catactrophical optical damage occured. We will discuss the influence of heatsink design and cooling on wavelengthshift and lifetime.
