We present results on magneto-optical, polarization, and spectroscopic studies of dilute Cs vapor exposed to intense cw single-frequency laser radiation in the spectral region of atomic D2 line. We report the observation of a sub-Doppler structure in the fluorescence and transmission spectra on the F=4 → F′= 3,4,5 and F=3 → F′=2,3,4 transitions (in the latter case only in the presence of a non-zero magnetic field). Numerous experimental evidences and calculations show that, under the conditions of our experiment, the structure is caused by an amplification of the F=4 ↔ F′=5 and F=3 ↔ F′=2 radiation due to local population inversion among the magnetic sublevels. Besides the coherent populationtrapping on F=3 ↔ F′=2 transition, we have observed anti-trapping on the F=4 ↔ F′=5 transition at zero-magnetic field with circularly and linearly (less pronounced) polarized laser radiation. In addition, an asymmetry with respect the direction of the magnetic field exhibit itself when the magnetic field is directed along the σ- polarized laser propagation. It is found that amplification due to inversion among the magnetic sublevels may occur for a weak magnetic field.
