We present a theoretical discussion of the two-color stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) [1] in a three-level atomic system involving a pump and a Stokes pulse when one of the peak Rabi frequencies is larger than the difference between the two carrier frequencies. In this case we cannot assign each pulse to a unique transition as is done with the usual RWA. Unlike the usual three-state STIRAP non-negligible transient population is established in the intermediate state during the process, even for large pulse areas. This indicates that the transfer can not be described as adiabatic rotation of the dark state from initial state to the target state. We show that for large difference between carrier frequencies, this process can be treated perturbatively and the Schr"odinger equation can be solved analytically. In general case, we develop a model which takes into account the mutual interaction the large fields with both transitions by means of Floquet theory.
