Adiabatic passage for efficient population transfer induced by chirped laser pulses in three-level Λ system is investigated. Two different strategies (equal and opposite sign of the chirp) are analyzed. It is shown that blue detuning from the one-photon resonance leads to less transient population of the intermediate level than red detuning. The results are rationalized on the basis of adiabatic dressed states. Fully off-resonant adiabatic passage scheme by two pulses with same sign of the chirp is also considered on the basis of numerical solutions of the Schr"odinger equation. The robustness of both schemes in terms of the Rabi frequency, chirp rate, detuning and time delay of the pulses is explored.
