Dielectric microspheres are attractive optical resonators for applications ranging from Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics1 to microlasers2. In small spheres the mode volume of the Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) is of the order of only a few hundred cubic wavelengths thus leading to field strengths of the order of 1kV/m. Quality factors of 109 are routinely achieved.

In this talk green room temperature upconversion lasing will be demonstrated in a 120µm diameter microsphere of ZBLAN doped with 800ppm Er3+. Lasing occurs around 550nm with the diode laser pump at 801nm. The lasing threshold is only 30µW of absorbed power which is about two orders of magnitude lower than the lowest threshold of an IR to visible upconversion laser measured to date3.
