Dynamical cooling and condensation of trapped gases — •L. Santos1,2 and M. Lewenstein11Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Hannover, 30167 Hannover — 2Departamento de Física Aplicada, Universidad de Salamanca, 37008 Salamanca, Spain

We study the laser cooling of trapped bosonic gases beyond the Lamb–Dicke limit. Using quantum Master equation formalism we demonstrate that similar dark–state cooling methods as those designed for a single trapped atom, allow for condensation of a collection of bosons into an arbitrary state of the trap, i.e. either a ground or an excited state. Such condensation is robust, can be achieved in experimentally feasible traps, and may lead to multistability and hysteresis phenomena. Using Monte Carlo simulations we analyse the condensation dynamics in 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensions, and for various cooling schemes.
