Magnetized Transport of Laser Driven Ultra-High Currents — •Mitsuru Honda, Jürgen Meyer-ter-Vehn, and Alexander Pukhov — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85748 Garching

Magnetized transport of laser driven ultra-high currents (1012−14A/cm2
): filamentation and coalescence of relativistic electron beams have been investigated by using a 2D3V particle-in-cell (PIC) code VLPL (Virtual Laser Plasma Laboratory) [Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 41, 1502 (1996)]-Upgrade coupled with fully relativistic binary collisions. It is found that the collisional effects enhance the filamentation of beams in the linear growth region of the electromagnetic instabilities as consistent with the perturbation analysis. The pinching of beam is enhanced by ion motions. The self-generated magnetic fields do not only confine the fractional charge neutral ions within the beam columns, but also spread the return current sheaths, namely, the coaxial electron beam sustained by charge neutral ions are constructed as a fully developed nonlinear structure. The stopping power of beam is significantly enhanced by the collisional effects.
