Charm production at HERMES — •E.C. Aschenauer — DESY Zeuthen, D–15735 Zeuthen, Germany

Charm production in polarized deep–inelastic lepton nucleon scattering is believed to be one of the cleanest probes to study the fraction of the nucleon spin Δ G carried by gluons. The HERMES experiment employs an open geometry forward magnetic spectometer to study the scattering of polarized 27.5 GeV electrons from pure polarized gas targets of H, D, 3He. An extensive search for charm signals in the data collected in 1995–1997 has been carried out. Clean signals for both hidden and open charm were discovered. Recently, major upgrades to the HERMES spectrometer have been implemented which will significantly improve the charm reconstruction capabilities of the experiment. Preliminary results from the ongoing analysis and future prospects will be presented.
